Reader,

“Invasion” games like soccer are defined by the need to make rapid, high-pressure decisions. Often, we try to train this by constantly speeding up our practices. However, fascinating research across team sports suggests that integrating “slow-time” teaching strategies can dramatically improve “high-speed” decision-making.

The concept revolves around empowering players to “reflect-on-action” away from the physical intensity of the pitch. By engaging players in slow, deliberate theory or video sessions where they dissect specific scenarios (like breaking down a block or executing a transition), they build a shared mental model and a common language.

This slow-to-quick evolution allows players to eventually play “in-action” pre-reflectively. When the high-pressure moment arrives on match day, they no longer need to make decisions helter-skelter; they have already collectively solved the problem in “slow-time”.

Three Things to Consider

1. Shift the focus to thought. When asking players to reflect, encourage them to think about their thought processes (metacognition), not just the technical execution.

2. Build a common language. Use off-pitch discussions to ensure everyone understands the terminology and roles required for specific tactical moments.

3. Share the ownership. When players are engaged in building strategies to bring a shared vision to life, it improves team cohesion and reduces the isolation of the coach.

One thing to try this week

Incorporate a 10-minute “slow-time” session before you step on the grass. Show a brief video clip of a specific game scenario, break the players into small groups to discuss the solutions, and have them present their ideas to the team before practicing it live.
