Reader,

This week, I have been fortunate enough to attend two World Cup fixtures and the engagement and excitement around the game is huge.

It’s certainly got me thinking about development of the women’s game and what a massive catalyst tournaments like the World Cup can be for engagement and development of players.

In the past, Scandinavian teams have been pioneers for the women’s game, and as it grows, so does global competitiveness.

So, if we look forward and hope that the current tournament does inspire more young girls to play the beautiful game, what do we need to do to ensure they stay in the game?

  1. Embrace the nuance and difference that makes the girl’s and women’s game a unique prospect.
  2. Ensure you deliver sessions that are engaging, look like the game and are competitive.
  3. Consider whether your club is truly investing in girls and women’s football to provide opportunities for all.

Two things to consider.

  1. Does your club spend as much time providing opportunities for female footballers to play and train as their male counterparts?
  2. Many coaches speak about the difference between coaching boys and girls and the curiosity female players have when it comes to learning. Do you allow for player-led activities in your practice?

One thing for you to try this week.

Do you provide opportunities for mixed football which can be beneficial to the development of youth female players? If not, consider how you could establish this for players who may want a different challenge point.

One critical resource on the topic.
