Reader,

Last week, I was fortunate to lead our club’s Men’s First Team through the second of two preseason culture sessions. In a senior football context, performance is the focus. This requires a clear vision, strategy, planning and good processes.

During the session, a lot of the discussion centred on what it will take as a team to ensure our processes are right. This ranged from everything to preparation, recovery, nutrition, and consistent effort at training. The session allowed both players and coaches to discuss and agree on team values, non-negotiables, expectations (of each other) and I challenged them to discuss what some of their ideas actually looked like in the environment, on the grass or around the training ground.

To prepare a team to perform, it’s about so much more than just having good players, a great philosophy or superior tactics. By investing time ‘sitting around the campfire’ and creating some accountability, clarifying what our goals are, the players and coaches had a chance to speak up and set the direction for the season.

We discussed what high performance looks like, what it takes to prepare, the importance of communication and honesty and of course, the power of connection within the group.

Two things to consider.

  1. Allow time, ideally at the start of the season, to agree team values and establish what performance looks like in your context. Set targets that are specific, attainable, measurable, relevant and time-based.
  2. Ensure if you set values and agree standards that they are visible, lived and the team holds each other to account. If necessary, create space for a check-in and review or reflect on these during the season too.

One thing for you to try this week.

Values can be defined as “A person’s principles or standards of behaviour; one’s judgement of what is important in life.” Consider writing down your own values. What do you stand for? Reflect on how these impact you in your coaching.

One critical resource on the topic.
